The Haunted House

Maya and Sofia are ten years old. They usually walk home after school.
Today is Halloween, and they are wearing small costumes. They are carrying flashlights.
On their street there is an old house. It looks empty and quiet.
The door is open. They hear a strange sound: “rip… rip… rip…”

Maya is usually brave, but her hands are shaking now.
Sofia doesn’t usually go into dark places, and she is holding Maya’s arm.
They are stepping inside. The floor is creaking.
Spider webs are shining in the light. A picture is moving a little.
A chair is rocking by itself. “We are not alone,” whispers Sofia.

The sound is louder behind a long curtain.
They are walking slowly and breathing fast.
Together, they pull the curtain back.
A tiny kitten is playing with the torn cloth, ripping it like paper!
“It’s just you!” Maya laughs. The kitten jumps into Sofia’s arms and purrs.
Now the girls are smiling. They are carrying the kitty outside.
Today, the “haunted” house becomes a funny story to tell.
