Leo and the Lynx

🥾 Leo and the Lynx

Every weekend, Leo goes hiking with his dad. They pack sandwiches, fill their bottles, and choose a new trail.
Today, they are walking through a quiet forest in southern Spain. The sun is shining, and the birds are singing.

Suddenly, Leo stops.

“There’s something in the bushes,” he says. His dad is looking at the map. “What is it?” he asks.

A small animal is watching Leo. It has pointy ears, long legs, and bright eyes.

“It’s a lynx!” whispers Leo.

The lynx is not running away. It is sitting still. Slowly, Leo crouches down. He isn’t moving. He is smiling.

Now, the lynx is walking closer. It isn’t scared. It’s curious. Leo offers some water. The lynx drinks.

For a few minutes, they are just there—watching each other. Then the lynx walks away, quiet and calm.

Back at home, Leo draws a picture of the lynx.
“Will we see it again?” he asks.
His dad smiles. “Maybe. Nature always surprises us.”

🐾 The Iberian Lynx – A Wild Cat from Andalusia

The Iberian lynx is a wild cat. It lives only in Spain and Portugal. In Spain, you can find it in Andalusia, especially in Doñana (Huelva) and Sierra de Andújar (Jaén).

It has short fur with black spots, long legs, and a small beard under its chin. Its ears are big and pointy, with black hair on top. The lynx looks like a small leopard!

The Iberian lynx is very quiet. It walks alone and hunts at night. During the day, it rests under trees or rocks. It eats rabbits, birds, and small animals.

Right now, many people are helping the lynx. They are building safe areas and planting more trees. Some scientists are watching lynxes with cameras. Other teams are taking care of baby lynxes in special centres.

There were only 94 lynxes in 2002. Today, there are more than 1,000!

The Iberian lynx is still in danger, but it is getting stronger every year.
